Can you help me out? — Sharon All our sources agreed about the hospital’s east Medford whereabouts, Sharon, and from what we’ve been able to determine, the hospital location has changed twice in its 107-year history. The three members of the Sisters of Charity of Providence who took over the Southern Oregon Hospital converted the small, failing facility into Sacred Heart Hospital in 1911. Nearly a year after they arrived, Sister Praxedes, Sister Pascal and Sister Gerard moved Sacred Heart Hospital to a new location on Nob Hill, according to Providence Medford Medical Center’s website. Providence’s information, when we lined it up with information from the city of Medford and a book published by Sacred Heart Catholic Church called “The First 50 Years,” seem to place the facility at approximately where East Main Street and Ashland Avenue meet in east Medford. That’s near where Roosevelt Elementary School now stands; most of the surrounding area is populated by houses. Kira Lesley, archivist with the Southern Oregon Historical Society, told us the original building was demolished; Providence’s website indicates that it was a red brick building with electric fans, and the sick rooms were heated with hot water. Much of the information recorded about the hospital’s moves and facilities comes from Mail Tribune articles from those times. The hospital moved again in the 1960s when it was relocated to the corner where you can still find it in its present form: Providence Medford Medical Center.
