Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 26, 2005 Rogue River hangs tough in Skyline loss to Phoenix Prep Volleyball PHOENIX — Rogue River was able to set the tempo, but Phoenix overcame a lackluster performance to post its eighth victory in the past nine Skyline Conference volleyball matches Tuesday. The Pirates edged closer to a league playoff for second place with a 25-18, 25-10, 25-23 win over the Chieftains. If Phoenix (21-8, 8-3 Skyline) wins at Illinois Valley and Mazama defeats Rogue River in the conference finale on Thursday, the two teams will tie for second in the conference standings and play a state seeding match. "Rogue River did a good job dictating play," Phoenix coach Tom Murphy said. "It was a slow, mechanical, methodical game and that worked to their advantage. We like a quicker pace." Phoenix senior middle Kelsey Nelson led with a team-high 17 kills, two blocks and was 10 of 11 serving. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Fidler added 12 kills. "Our ball handling wasn’t where it’s been, so there were less hitting opportunities across the front line," said Murphy. "But those two girls (Nelson and Fidler) were able to adjust and put balls down." Advertisement The Pirates served at a subpar 88 percent. "We have to be able to serve effectively at 93 or 94 percent in a key match," said Murphy. "If you serve effectively, it keeps a team out of their transition offense. Rogue River led for much of the third game before Phoenix rallied. Junior outside hitter Michelle Degel paced the Chieftains with seven kills and six digs, while Kaitlin Hoffman added five kills and six digs. Rogue River junior setter Jessica Miller had four blocks to go with 18 assists, and junior outside Cassie Giesbrecht had 11 digs. "We didn’t play exceptionally well," said Murphy. "In the second game, we were more efficient than the first or third." MAZAMA 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 — At Klamath Falls, Mazama kept pace with Phoenix — the two are tied for second place in the Skyline Conference —with a 22-25, 25-8, 25-11, 25-13 win. Quenby Cox had 13 kills, five stuff blocks and an ace for the Vikings (9-3, 8-3 Skyline), and Danielle Stratton had four aces and 10 straight points in Game 2. Also for the Vikings, Alyssa Starley pounded seven kills and four blocks, while Audrey Inman distributed 32 assists. HENLEY 3, HIDDEN VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, Henley remained undefeated in conference play after sweeping Hidden Valley 25-15, 25-23, 25-14 in the Skyline match. Setter Sierra Patzke had 30 assists to lead the Hornets (12-0 Skyline), which rallied from a 20-23 deficit in Game 2. Henley also got a strong performance from junior Mikayla Morgan (12 kills, five aces). Southern Cascade League ST. MARY’S 3, RIDDLE 0 — At Riddle, St. Mary’s rallied from a 6-1 deficit in the third game to defeat Riddle 25-10, 25-9, 27- 25 in the Southern Cascade League match. It was the fifth straight win for the Crusaders (16-10, 8-4 SCL). St. Mary’s had everything working in the first two games, but momentum changed quickly in Game 3. The Crusaders twice faced game point, at 24-22 and 25-24. But a St. Mary’s ace, then a kill by Kelsey Reedy closed out the sweep. Reedy led St. Mary’s with 16 kills and 12 digs, while Tia Khachitphet contributed 22 digs. Sophomore setter Cynthia Naumes had 34 assists and extended her flawless effort at the service line to two straight matches with a 22-for-22 performance. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, GLENDALE 0 — At Glendale, Melissa Gmur and Cascade Christian swept the conference match 25-20, 30-28, 25-14. Gmur finished with 21 kills, 17 assists and 13 digs to lead the Challengers (10-2 SCL). Cascade Christian also got strong performances by Erika Thorpe (11 kills, 19 assists, eight digs) and Andrea Garris (11 digs). Skyline A League HOSANNA CHRISTIAN 3, BUTTE FALLS 2 — At Klamath Falls, for the second straight year, Hosanna defeated Butte Falls at home after losing on the road. The loss drops the Loggers (8-2 Sky A) one-half game behind Prospect for first place in the Southern Division. The Lions played strong defense against the mistake-prone Loggers to win the decisive fifth game 15-11. PROSPECT 3, GILCHRIST 0 — At Prospect, Prospect defeated Gilchrist 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 in the Sky A Southern match. Lacy Musard had 10 kills and three aces, while Meghan Scriven was 15-for-15 serving with four aces for Prospect (9-2 Sky A Southern). Megan Shallenberger and Catherine Anderson combined for 17 assists for the Cougars.
