Chancler went 4-for-4 in the opener, but the Hawks scored three times in the sixth to grab the lead and hold on for an 8-6 win. South Medford (15-6, 10-4 Area 4) answered in the nightcap behind four more hits and six RBIs by Chancler to take a 15-7 victory and salvage the split. Logan Boyd had two hits and three RBIs in Game 1, while Tyler Heil added three hits and three RBIs. Little League Baseball MEDFORD AMERICAN BLUE UNBEATEN — At Ashland, the Medford American Blue team improved to 2-0 in the 9-10-year-old district tournament with a 3-0 victory over Ashland Red on Sunday at Hunter Park. Shaun Whitehead pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out seven while walking one. Second baseman Marcus Ellis keyed a fine defensive effort behind Whitehead, and Cody Wedman provided two of Medford Blue’s four hits. Saturday, Medford Blue trounced South Suburban Blue from outside Klamath Falls, 8-0, on the strength of Colton Cochran’s three-hit, seven-strikeout shutout. Medford Blue resumes play in the 13-team, double-elimination tournament Wednesday against Phoenix-Talent Red. MEDFORD NATIONAL EVENS RECORD — At Brookings, the Medford National team evened their record at 1-1 in their 9-10-year-old district tournament with a 15-11 victory over Central Point in seven innings. Medford National, which dropped its opener to Roseburg on Saturday, plays the Medford Federal team today at 6 p.m. in pool play. Medford jumped to an 11-2 lead behind pitcher Jeremy Scottow, but Central Point rallied to send the game into extra innings at 11-all. National scored four-unanswered runs in the top half of the seventh to secure the win. Tony Cortez led the offensive attack with four hits and three RBIs, while Kevin Thibeault was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. ASA Softball BLUE ACES TAKE SEVENTH AT STATE — At Salem, the South Medford Blue Aces 12-under fastpitch team finished seventh in the three-day, 32- team state tournament. The Blue Aces (45-15) finished with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Tualatin Twins on Sunday to move their record in tournament play to 4-2. Pitcher Jessica Mondale worked in all six contests and averaged seven strikeouts per game. Offensively, South Medford had big performances from Alana Coronado, who provided a pair of key hits in a 6-1 victory over cross-town rival North Medford. Also providing some offensive punch were Courtney Bishop and Kinzie Towry, who both came through with a pair of hits during a 16-1 romp over the Hillsboro Tornado.
