Heider recorded pitching wins in each of Eagle Point’s five victories at the 22-team event. She fanned 37 and walked just three. The Eagles also defeated the Venom, 2-1, earlier on Sunday. Heider singled home Terrah Whipple, who had led off with a double, to give Eagle Point the lead for good in the fifth inning. In the championship game, Eagle Point batted only eight players from the second inning on after catcher Amanda Hamner injured her knee. Little League Softball NFPSA STATE FINALS — At Aurora, Taylor Schmidt had 26 strikeouts and recorded four straight pitching wins as the Black Tornado 12-and-under softball team won the state championship Sunday. Advertisement Medford defeated the Salem Slyders, 6-2, for the crown. Schmidt finished with eight strikeouts in the title game, and Mikayla Meerten belted a two-run double to help North erase a two-run deficit. North Medford finished its season at 63-11. It began the day by scoring five runs in the fourth inning of a 7-0 victory over the Tualatin Lady Wolves. Schmidt and Nikki Jones each had RBI hits. Schmidt then tossed a no-hit, 2-0 win over the Yamhill Tigers’ Rage. The Tornado, despite going hitless itself, scored in the fourth and seventh innings. North then beat the Gresham Shockwave 6-2 behind an RBI triple from Jessica Pardue. Meerten and Kelsey Leming each scored five runs on the day, and Brittany Pardue added four. Legion Baseball MUSTANGS 8-14, BAY AREA RAMS 1-0 — At Coos Bay, the Medford Mustangs swept the American Legion Area 4 doubleheader Monday to stay one game behind Roseburg in the league standings. The Mustangs are 12-4 with four games in Area 4 and 26-10 overall. Rich Imhausen and Josh Suarez each were the winning pitchers Monday. Imhausen recorded his fourth victory in the opener and Suarez held Bay Area to one hit — a fifth-inning single — in the nightcap to improve to 6-0 on the season. Kyle Williamson went 5-for-6 on the day with four RBIs and two runs, while Dan Chancler had five hits and drove in three. Rob Folsom added four hits, while Chad Hegdahl went 4-for-4 in Game 2 with three RBIs. NORTH MEDFORD MAVERICKS 12-10, ASHLAND PILOTS 8-10 — At Ashland, North Medford’s Matt Schmelzer went 3-for-4 with three runs as the Mavericks took the opener of an Area 4 doubleheader with Ashland. The second game was called due to darkness with the teams tied at 10-all. Tyler Lake hit his second home run of the season — a solo shot in the fourth inning — and Logan Odom ripped a three-run blast to right-center field in the fifth for North. Darren Bruhns went 2-for-4 in Game 1 and finished the day with four hits. Aaron Marlia and Shea Bedortha each added a pair of hits in the nightcap. North Medford is now 15-26-1 overall and 7-14-1 in league. KLAMATH FALLS 4-5, EAGLE POINT 0-0 — At Eagle Point, Klamath Falls took advantage of a lapse by the Eagles in the third inning of the Area 4 twin bill Monday. With two outs, the Hawks used two hit batters, an error and two singles to score all four runs. EP pitcher Ricky O’Callahan allowed only three hits and struck out eight. Klamath Falls, aided by five errors in the nightcap, scored three unearned runs for the win. Eagle Point, which dropped out of playoff contention, is 13-9 in league and 24-13 overall. Little League Baseball 11-12-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Gresham, Pendleton handed the Medford Americans their first loss of the double-elimination tournament, 7-5. Cody James hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the game, but Medford wouldn’t score again until a four-run sixth inning. Medford had five different players record a hit, but left three runners stranded in the final inning. Matt Maurer had an RBI for Medford. The Americans play Rogue River tonight at 7:30. Both teams are 1-1 in the tournament. Golf JUNIOR WORLDS — Mike Barry of Medford tied for 44th place in the 2004 Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in La Jolla, Calif., Friday. Barry, who will be a senior at North Medford High, was 18 over par for the tournament, coming in at 306 on the Torrey Pines South Course. Playing in the 15-17-year-old boys division, his rounds were 75, 75, 78 and 78. In the girls 15-17 group, Stephanie Johns of Ashland missed the cut.
