Figueroa guides Fooses Flyer to derby win By Mail Tribune staff Oct 13, 2020 07:29 AM A A GRANTS PASS — Jockey Jose Figueroa won two races, including one of two feature events, at Grants Pass Downs Monday. Figueroa captured the first and fifth races, in the latter bringing home Fooses Flyer in the 400-yard Autumn Derby. The quarter horse race had a $26,000 purse, with $10,400 going to the winner. Fooses Flyer, the No. 2 qualifier for the derby, edged Mighty Tony T by a nose with a late surge, winning in 20.044 seconds. The horse is trained by Benito Curiel and owned by Malon Cowgill. The other feature event was the Ashland Handicap Stakes for thoroughbreds in the seventh. Chase the Music, with Jaime Lopez aboard, outlasted Parkers Rose by 1 1/2 lengths in the 6 1/2-furlong race. McKenzie King was the leading jockey on the day, riding victors in the fourth, sixth and eighth races. Two of the wins, the fourth and sixth, were for Quinn Howey, the only trainer with two triumphs. Racing resumes today with an eight-race card, beginning at 4 p.m. Gates open at 3.
