Their top runner, Marci Klimek, was back in Talent playing in a soccer game. The runner filling in at No. 1, freshman Anne Hagy, was in 15th place with the rest of the Pirates spread out through the pack. "They about gave me a heart attack at that point," said Phoenix coach Bruce Timmerman. "But they packed up, stayed close together and moved up pretty well." By the end of the 5,000-meter race, the Pirates had five runners in the top 13, all crossing the finish line within 31 seconds to win the meet with 41 points compared to Mazama’s 49. Jasmine Klauder won the individual title in 20 minutes, 53 seconds to lead Mazama. The Vikings returned all seven runners from last season’s conference champion squad, while Phoenix lost its top three runners from 2003. Advertisement "It was a mild upset," Timmerman said. "We were just going to make sure we took care of second, but when we got there, I told the girls ‘It’s a great day for racing — let’s win this thing.’" Hagy placed seventh to pace the Pirates in a time of 22:57, with teammates Erin Moss ninth (23:12) and Jordi Hurd 10th (23:15). North Valley’s Ashley Gilkey and Emily Morehouse, Hidden Valley’s McKenzie Jones and Rogue River’s Allegra Fety and Amanda Selanders all earned individual bids to state by placing in the top seven. Phoenix also had reason to rejoice on the boys side, with sophomore Kevin Jantzer giving the Pirates their fourth straight individual champion, winning in 18:09. "Kevin went out, took the lead and never gave it up," Timmerman said. "He won the Pre-Skyline meet back in September, but (the win) wasn’t a given. He got a good challenge from three other runners." Teammate Tyler Davis will accompany Jantzer to state after placing seventh in 18:37. Illinois Valley’s Graham Baker was the runner-up in 18:22. Hidden Valley and North Valley tied for the boys team title, but the Mustangs took home the trophy based on the sixth-runner tiebreaker. Both teams advance to state. North Valley appeared to have the inside track for the title with Robert Clark placing fourth and Harley Mills sixth. But Hidden Valley had six runners in front of the Knights’ fourth, the most important being No. 6 runner Blake Estep in 19th, eight places ahead of North Valley’s No. 6. "As soon as they said there was a tie for the championship, I knew we had it," Hidden Valley coach Stan Goodell said. "Our sixth runner has been the best in the league all year." The team titles were the first in school history for both Phoenix and Hidden Valley. Jantzer and Klauder were designated Skyline Conference cross country athletes of the year, while Illinois Valley’s Bill Yeoman was named coach of the year.
