In their first outing since being elevated to the top spot, the Panthers rolled to a 95-41 Southern Oregon Conference road victory over Eagle Point. "Obviously, they weren’t rattled," quipped Eagle Point coach Keith Williams about South Medford taking over as the state’s top-ranked team. South Medford (21-1, 12-0 SOC) got off to a fast start — leading 23-11 after the first quarter — and stretched the margin to 50-16 at halftime. "They turned us over early," said Williams. "We made some poor decisions off their pressure." The Eagles (2-18, 0-12 SOC) committed 11 of their 15 turnovers in the first half. Advertisement "They’re a lot bigger than us and that’s everywhere," said Williams. "They have some quickness, too. They got their hands on a lot of balls." With South taking control of the game from the outset, Panther coach Dennis Murphy went to his bench. Sophomore Brent Johnson, a 6-foot-6 backup post, responded with a season-high 18 points to lead all scorers, and substitute guard Tyler Heil chipped in 12. "(Murphy) substituted liberally," said Williams. "They ran a lot of different lineups at us. South didn’t try to force anything. They put the ball where it needed to be and finished the play regardless who was on the floor." The Panthers were very efficient offensively — shooting 64 percent from the field (34 of 53) and an impressive 22 of 24 from the line. Conversely, Eagle Point shot 35 percent and didn’t go to the foul line once. "They took us out of a lot of our offensive things," said Williams. "At times we didn’t look like we knew what we wanted to do. "I don’t want to take anything away from South, but we just didn’t respond very well." SOUTH MEDFORD (95) — B.
