By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune The 21-year-old woman is determined that her girls, ages 1 and 3, will not grow up like she did. She made up her mind this year to leave a violent household for the sake of her children, says Sherry Jones, coordinator of the Transitional Living Program at Community Works of Medford. "She’s highly motivated to be successful," Jones says. "She wants to move way, way beyond her own life for her kids." Advertisement Thanks to the program, the woman has a safe, clean place to live in Medford. She’s looking for work, though, and a job that uses her experience caring for wildlife would be ideal, Jones says. "She would like to work as a veterinary assistant," Jones says. "She’ll start cleaning the kennels, if that’s what it takes." Beyond a job, this mom could use almost anything for a household with a baby and preschooler: a playpen, a stroller, diapers and baby wipes, even basics such as shampoo, deodorant and toilet paper. Ordinary household goods would also be welcome: a microwave, a vacuum cleaner, laundry supplies. The best way to give to the family would be through gift certificates to department or grocery stores, Jones says. One final thought: The woman is worried about gifts for her girls this Christmas, their first away from the abuse they endured for years. The 3-year-old wants a LeapPad Learning System toy and Jones is trying hard to find her one. "She’s 3 and smart, smart, smart," Jones says.
