Pirates sweep away Mazama KLAMATH FALLS A year older. A year wiser. So far, the Phoenix High softball team is showing what it learned from a tough start to league play last year and is putting it to good use. The Pirates opened their 2001 Skyline Conference campaign with a convincing 12-3, 15-6 doubleheader sweep of Mazama on Saturday. "Boy was I having fun," said Phoenix coach Rich Ficek on Saturdays games. "Last year we struggled so much offensively. "We really hit the ball well today and have been so far this season." Phoenix (5-1, 2-0), which returned seven starters from last years 14-7 squad, struggled early in conference play last season and had to win nine straight games to make the playoffs. Ficek is hoping the 2-0 start can help ease the pressure on this years team. "I had a great team last year but, so far this season, they are making things easier on me," said Ficek. Tiffany Ross held the Vikings hitless through five innings before giving way to Kendra Kohler in the opener. Kohler led the Pirates with three hits and Amanda Moore added two. Ross struck out six and improved her record to 4-0 on the season. "Ive coached some great pitchers, but she is one of the best," said Ficek of the first-team all-conference sophomore. "She threw the ball pretty much by everybody." In the nightcap, Phoenix used a four-run first inning and a five-run fifth to help seal the win. Jennifer Dunlap went 3-for-3, while Megan Capp added two hits. Kohler picked up her first win of the season after three innings of work.
