Local health providers offer free skin cancer screening Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 8, 2015 at 9:50 AM Posted May. 8, 2015 at 9:50 AM » Social News Local dermatologists and the American Academy of Dermatology in partnership with Rogue Community Health will hold a free skin cancer screening event from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 20, at Rogue Community Health, 19 Myrtle Street, Medford. Registration is required. Call 541-842-7648 for an appointment. The screening will provide uninsured and underinsured people the opportunity to receive a free screening and is part of the American Academy of Dermatology's effort to increase the focus on preventive healthcare. A likely candidate for the screening would be someone fair-haired, fair-skinned, who grew up in a sunny location or has a history of tanning bed use, and who has no insurance, high insurance deductible and/or is experiencing financial hardship. "People with lighter skin are at greater risk and should check their skin regularly for early warning signs of skin cancer," Dr. Judith Redd, a dermatologist with Rogue Valley Dermatology and volunteer coordinator of the event, said in a release. "We'll check moles and other spots for signs of cancer and determine if further analysis is necessary." Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. It accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. More than 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed in this country each year. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will account for more than 73,000 cases of skin cancer in 2015 and 75 percent of all deaths from skin cancer. Physicians and other health care workers volunteering for the 2015 screening include: Carolyn Bartlett, NP; Denise Burke, MD; J. David Igelman, MD; Douglas Naversen, MD; Judith Redd, MD; and Drew Reese, DO.
