Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, and peace followed four years of a bloody civil war.   Mrs. Emma Hughes died at her home in this city this morning of lockjaw, caused by stepping on a rusty nail three weeks ago, aged 34 years, 4 months and 17 days. She is survived by a son, Raleigh, and daughter, Ina, a mother, Mrs. Rosina Bedford, two sisters, Mrs. Mary M. Roberts and Mrs. A.C. Johnson, and a brother, Henry Bedford of Wilderville, Calif. The funeral services will be held Monday from this city, interment in Rogue River cemetery.   Representatives of timber interests in Jackson county called upon the county court Thursday afternoon, and protested against the proposed raise in timber assessments. Every large holding in this section, including the Weyerhauser company, the Weed Lumber company, the Hopkins interests and others were in attendance. No action was taken by the county court, the matter being entirely with the board of capitalization. The timbermen maintained that their holdings were overestimated in value, and that an increase in valuation would be a burden.   Darrell Minkler , a member of the high school, motored to Ashland last Sunday.   "Resolved, That gum chewing is a detriment to the Nation," was the question for debate at the high school Monday morning. James Vance, Miles Gamel and Ruth Daniels of the affirmative won.   The high school alumni will give a dance at the Natatorium Tuesday, April 13, the high school is cordially invited.   Suit to recover from County Treasurer Fred Colvig fees retained while county recorder, from private parties for copies of county records furnished abstract concerns, was ordered filed Thursday afternoon by the county court. The suit involves about $1,000, collected during Colvig's term as county recorder. The county holds that Colvig has no right under the state law to keep the fees. Colvig holds that he had, as long as the copies of the record are not certified.
