Mail Tribune / Andrew Mariman Newsom bags third city title Consistent final round leads to three-stroke victory for former Medford resident By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune Brooks Newsom celebrated his 36th birthday in style Sunday at the Cedar Links Golf Course. The former Medford resident rode a furious finish Saturday and a hot start in Sunday’s final round to claim his third Medford City Championships’ title by shooting a 2-under-par 138 over the two-day tournament. Newsom previously won the City Championships, also known as the Rogue Valley Stroke Play Championships, in 2003 and 2001, and was runner-up last year. He shot a 69 both days, but pointed to a nice round Saturday as the difference. Advertisement "Instead of having to make a couple birdies on the first four holes (today) to get even, I was already there," said Newsom, who lives in Portland but has in-laws in the Rogue Valley. "Psychologically, it was nice to be in that position." Bryan Schlafke finished second with a 1-over 141, while David Boals was third with a 142. Defending champion Bret Breeze was 10th with a 146. In the women’s division, Carmen Akins rallied from a four-stroke deficit to win her third straight title with a 155 — 13 strokes better than second-place finisher Kimberly Wood. Brooks Hodapp triumphed in the men’s senior championship flight with a 144 to nab his first-ever crown. He held off perennial senior men’s challenger Dan Dixon (145) and unseated defending champion Terry Anderson. Newsom’s results Sunday were a mixed bag. He birdied on the third and fourth holes to cushion his lead and moved to 3-under on the 13th with another birdie. His next few holes, however, turned into an adventure. Newsom went awry with two 3-iron shots on the 15th, then sailed his tee-shot wide right on the 16th into the wall of the driving range. He would settle for bogey on both holes. But Newsom would settle down to par the final hole and put the finishing touches on his championship performance. "I guess it’s a good thing I started well," Newsom chuckled. "I finished very shaky." Schlafke, along with Glen Clark and Kelly Rasmussen, entered the day one shot off the lead. The Medford resident finished Sunday’s round with 17 pars and just one bogey to hold off Boals for second. "I was just trying to stay consistent and take pars," Schlafke said of his highest finish in 10 tries at the tournament. "I was basically trying to stay in the same zip code with (Newsom)." The City Championships was likely the last major hurrah for Cedar Links, which has hosted the tournament since its inception in 1984. There is a proposal to turn the 33-year-old course into a housing development, which could move the tournament to Stone Ridge Golf Course next year. Newsom, who first played in the tournament in 1997, was disappointed the event may not return to Cedar Links. "I think it’s sad," he said. "The greens have a lot of character here. You’re on the edge of your seat not knowing if (your putt) is going down until it actually drops in the hole because of all the dips and turns. "I really enjoy playing this course." Newsom and a host of others will vie for the Southern Oregon Golf Tournament crown starting this week at Rogue Valley Country Club. The seven-day event begins Tuesday with local qualifying and concludes the following Monday with the championship round.
