Mail Tribune lottery series, staffers win top awards From staff and wire reports "Betting on the Future," a four-day Mail Tribune series of stories detailing the 20th anniversary of the Oregon Lottery’s economic and personal impact, was awarded first place Saturday for Social Issues coverage in judging by the regional chapter of the national Society for Professional Journalists. The award was one of 10 received by the Mail Tribune, which was judged among newspapers with circulations between 25,001 and 65,000 subscribers in the 2005 SPJ Northwest Excellence in Journalism Contest. Papers from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska competed. The lottery series covered issues ranging from what percentage the proceeds from state-run games of chance go to state services to the impact on those individuals who become addicted to gambling. The series included more than a dozen stories, with a similar number of photographs and graphics. Three Mail Tribune staff members also won first-place awards, which were announced in Portland. Advertisement Reporter, columnist and reviewer Bill Varble received first place in Arts Criticism for his coverage of the "Henry VI Saga," particularly the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s combining of the second and third parts of Shakespeare’s trilogy into one piece for its 2004 season. Staff photographer Roy Musitelli took first place in Sports Action Photography for the photo shown on this page, one of a series he took chronicling the Rogue River High School softball team’s sufccessful season. Photo Editor Bob Pennell received first place for General news Photography for his coverage of the Rogue Valley visit of Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate. Other SPJ awards won by the Mail Tribune included: Second place in Editorial Writing, won by editorial page editor Gary E. Nelson, for a selection of his work. Third place for Comprehensive Coverage of an issue, won by the staff for "When somebody dies," a seven-day series about the practical aspects following a death. Third place in Government Reporting for "Voices of the Vote," a series covering aspects of the 2004 election season. The award cites reporters JoNel Aleccia, Bill Kettler and Damian Mann. Third place in Lifestyle Reporting won by reporter JoNel Aleccia for "Project Rebecca," a story about a North Medford High School senior whose pregnancy led to making open adoption her senior project. Third place in Arts Reporting won by Bill Varble for "Power of the past," his story on Ashland author Sandra Schofield’s memoir of her Texas childhood. Third place in Arts Criticism won by Tempo editor Richard Moeschl for his review of the Artattack Theatre production of "Closer."
