The Medford Mustangs discovered the truth in that clich Friday night at Miles Field, dropping Game 2 of a baseball doubleheader with the visiting Sierra Vista Lions from Las Vegas to suffer their first defeat of the season. The Mustangs won Game 1, 8-3, to temporarily improve to 13-0 in American Legion AAA action. But the Lions battled back with a 9-5 win in Game 2, using a six-run second inning to do the bulk of their damage. Scotty Berke crushed a bases-loaded double to drive in three runs during Sierra Vista’s monumental second, and Justin Garcia limited Medford to one hit in four innings of outstanding relief. Advertisement Garcia, who picked up the pitching win, entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the Mustangs’ fourth. He induced a sacrifice fly from Evan McArthur and then got Mike Allen to hit into a double play to end the inning. Catcher Rob Folsom was 3-for-4 to pace Medford’s nine-hit Game 2 attack. Shortstop McArthur went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI, and Chad Hegdahl was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. In the opener, Hegdahl improved to 2-0 by going the distance on the mound. The left-hander from Ashland struck out two, walked two and allowed 10 hits while limiting the Lions to just two earned runs in seven innings. Corey O’Neill topped the Mustang offense with a 3-for-4 effort.
