Betting handle continues surge at GPD By Mail Tribune staff Jun 18, 2020 11:52 AM A A GRANTS PASS — Grants Pass Downs eclipsed $200,000 in betting handle Wednesday, setting a record for the commercial meet for the second straight day. The track went commercial last fall, and the handle on Day 2 of this summer meet of $233,070 was more than $50,000 greater than Tuesday’s opening total of $181,082. Most of the betting was done off track, with $217,945 coming from six off-track sites in Oregon, including Lava Lanes in Medford, and advance-deposit wagering online sites. Six Firecracker Futurity Trials quarter horse races in the morning did not factor into the handle. There was no wagering on those races. In the eight-race twilight meet, trainer Quinn Howey and jockey Hugo Herrera teamed up for victories in the first and seventh races, including with Older Brother in the seventh, the Oregon Caves Stakes. Jockey Taylor Smith rode two winners, Dizzy Diva in the sixth and Sheza Colonel in the eighth. Dizzy Diva won his fourth race in five outings. The meet runs on Tuesday and Wednesday through July 8, with a 4 p.m. post time.
