Grizzlies claw past Livingston TRACY, Calif. -- What a difference a year makes. Ashland eclipsed one hurdle Wednesday night at the 16-team Lions Tournament, edging Livingston 53-50 for a first-round triumph. With the win, the Grizzlies (3-2) topped last season's total victory tally of two. Ashland will go in search of its fourth win of the young season tonight at 8 in the second round thanks to the efforts Wednesday of Brett Zundel, Sal Pippa and Mark Kalemkeris. Zundel paced the Grizzlies with 21 points, but it was Pippa and Kalemkeris who came up big in the fourth quarter to lift Ashland. After two Kalemkeris baskets kept the Grizzlies in contention, Pippa drained a jump shot with 20 seconds to play for the final margin of victory. "It wasn't a real exciting game in terms of skill," Ashland assistant coach Marius Boone said. "We came out a little flat and that's how we played until the fourth quarter. Then the guys really stepped it up on defense and we pulled (the game) out." McKay Challman scored 11 points and Kalemkeris added 10 to boost the Grizzlies. Ashland continues to play undermanned as the Grizzlies wait for teammates Kris Pavilionis, Jay Kuester, Jimmy Werbin and Zach Hassell to switch gears from football to basketball. The Grizzlies are scheduled to face either host Tracy or Central Valley in tonight's second round contest.
