Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 19, 2006 Big inning propels North Medford Baseball Roundup South Eugene pitcher Dan O’Brien retired 12 straight batters and throttled North Medford on one hit through 52/3 innings Saturday. Then the Black Tornado sent nine straight batters to the plate and rallied for an 8-2 season-opening baseball victory at North Medford High. Sophomore shortstop Zach Earle started the big inning with a walk and advanced to second on a steal. Zack James followed with an RBI single to tie the game 1-all. James moved to second on the play when the Axemen missed the cutoff man. Abe Eubank received the second walk of the inning by O’Brien and Logan Odom tagged a 3-2 pitch for an RBI single. Darren Bruhns continued the outburst with a two-run single as North took a 4-1 lead. After Aaron Marlia walked and Dustin Shipley loaded the bases with a drag bunt, pinch hitter Tyler Lake clubbed a grand slam. Advertisement Through the first five innings, O’Brien only needed 56 pitches, but the South Eugene starter threw 38 in the sixth inning before being pulled. Odom, the third of four Black Tornado pitchers, picked up the win with a 12/3 -inning stint. Andrew Jones relieved Odom with two out after South Eugene scored once and had two men on base in the seventh. Jones got out of the jam when catcher Bruhns picked off Dan Kiesse at first to end the game. Black Tornado starter Shea Bedortha allowed one unearned run in 32/3 innings of action. Trevor McCleery followed on the mound for 11/3 innings, surrendering three hits and striking out two.
