North boys, girls second at Chieftain race Saturday Oct 8, 2016 at 2:00 AM Oct 8, 2016 at 10:55 PM VALLEY OF THE ROGUE STATE PARK — Grants Pass swept the boys and girls team competitions ahead of North Medford after posting the individual winner in each race at the eight-school Chieftain Invitational on Saturday. The 5,000-meter girls race came down to a mad dash to the finish line, with Ahdra Klingler of Grants Pass pulling away for the win in 18 minutes, 28.74 seconds. North Medford posted the next best times in juniors Claire Ebert (second, 18:31.98) and Victoria Messer (third, 18:33.2). With six of the top 11 times, the Grants Pass girls were able to finish with 31 points, well ahead of runner-up North Medford’s 55 point total. St. Mary’s sophomore Emma Bennion placed fifth with a lifetime best time of 19:02.44 to help her team finish fourth overall. The Cavemen boys were dominant in posting five of the top seven times in their race, led by junior Nathan Burton’s winning time of 15:36.42. North Medford sophomore Jacob Allmaras placed third in 15:40.01 and senior teammate Sean Fagan was fifth (15:48.91) to pace the local effort as the Black Tornado finished 15 points shy of Grants Pass with 35 overall. YREKA ELKS INVITATIONAL: At Yreka, California, South Medford had the top two placers in the boys and girls meets to sweep the eight-school event at Greenhorn Park. South Medford junior Ty Boster won the boys 5,000 meters in 17:07.02 ahead of freshman teammate Truett Bostwick (17:16.78). The Panther boys totaled 34 points to edge McKinleyville in a tiebreaker. South Medford senior Lydia Scott won the girls race in 19:42.09 and junior teammate Jazmin Duncan was second (20:09.60) as the Panther girls scored 26 points to finish well ahead of Yreka (48 points). Volleyball BUTTE FALLS 3, GILCHRIST 1: At Butte Falls, Destinee Ault had 20 kills and 21 digs and Katie Munsell added 13 kills and 19 digs to power Butte Falls to a Mountain Valley League victory, 18-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-21. T’Neal Myers managed 14 digs and 11 assists and Hanna Kuykendall also had 11 assists for the Loggers (10-4, 6-2 MVL). Myers’ serving rallied Butte Falls in Game 2, posting one of her three aces to erase a 23-19 deficit for the final six points of the match. CLEARWATER CLASSIC: At Bend, North Medford won one of six matches in pool play to fall into the bronze bracket, where the Black Tornado posted a 1-1 record at Summit High. North Medford was swept by Clackamas (25-20, 25-21) and Ashland (26-24, 25-22) before splitting with Summit in pool play. In bracket action, the Black Tornado topped Springfield 25-17, 25-15 but couldn’t advance further as St. Mary’s Academy ended North’s tournament run with a 25-8, 25-20 victory. Tornado head coach Malcolm Munson credited the setting of Alex Barry and attacking play and service of Karen Polataivao for his team’s success in the tourney. Water Polo ASHLAND FARES WELL: Ashland’s girls team remained undefeated with three wins and the Grizzly boys went 3-1 in weekend action. Ashland won 20-7 over South Albany, 11-3 over North Eugene and 12-1 over Cottage Grove in girls competition. Amelia Zeve had four goals, three steals and two assists in the win over Cottage Grove, while Zee Harrison had three goals and Isabelle Nicolier managed 15 blocks in goal. Ashland’s boys picked up a 15-5 win over South Albany, 15-4 win over Marist and forfeit win over Cottage Grove to go with a tough 6-5 loss to North Eugene that saw Erik Oline score all five goals for the Grizzlies. Goalie Chris Ball had 12 blocks against the Highlanders.
