Murder suspect's trial likely this fall A Shady Cove man who allegedly shot and killed a friend during a drunken argument last year is expected to stand trial this fall. County sheriff deputies arrested 58-year-old Robert Mark Liles on Nov. 13. Police suspect Liles shot and killed 28-year-old Charles Earl May of Crescent City inside Liles' home at 4225 Indian Creek Road. Investigators allege the two men had been drinking and were arguing when Liles shot May in the torso with a shotgun. May was on the phone with his wife when Liles fired, police said. May was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a court affidavit, Liles told police, "I shot my best friend, and I'm sorry it happened. We never had a fight before." Liles was charged with murder and first-degree manslaughter in November and pleaded not guilty to both charges. Liles was initially charged with murder, but a grand jury added the manslaughter charge in December. The additional charge gives the jury another option should the case go to trial, a district attorney's office spokesman said earlier.
