Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 21, 2005 Since You Asked Theft at the gas pump is a misdemeanor in Oregon I heard that getting gas and leaving without paying is a felony in California. Is that true in Oregon? — Dick G., Medford The ol’ "cash and dash" may be a felony in California, but it’s nothing better than a misdemeanor in Oregon. Medford police Lt. Tim George says a fill-up and a take-off without paying is third-degree theft if it’s under $50, and second-degree theft if it’s under $750. For a felony charge, the theft must exceed $750. "You have to have a pretty big gas tank to get it to $750," George says. Or, the price of gas has to keep heading into the stratosphere. Already the price pushes some larger cars’ fill-ups into the second-degree theft category (more than 50 bucks). Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
