Defending champs too much for Black Tornado North Medford played Class 4A defending state champion Churchill of Eugene close for a quarter in non-conference boys basketball Tuesday. But the Lancers used a balanced scoring attack and a big rebounding edge to pull away for a 69-47 victory over the winless Black Tornado. Jordan Kent, son of University of Oregon men's basketball coach Ernie Kent and an early signee to the Ducks program, led three Churchill players in double figures with 20 points. "He rebounded the ball well, scored on putbacks and some takes to the basket," North head coach Tim Sam said. Senior post Jered Alsup added 19 points and senior wing Ethan Ralston had 11 for the Lancers. The Black Tornado (0-3) trailed 14-13 at the end of the first period, but Churchill outscored North 39-21 over the next two quarters. The Lancers capitalized on a 43-25 rebounding edge, including 17 on the offensive boards. Black Tornado senior guard Zach Rettman tied for game-high scoring honors with 20 points. North senior post Gabe Burchfiel contributed eight points and seven rebounds. "Zach Rettman had an awfully good game," Sam said. "He usually scores from the outside, but he had mostly drives to the basket and back cuts for his points tonight."
