Mail Tribune 100: May 27, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 27, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 27, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 27, 1916 ASK POPULAR REFERENDUM FOR POSTMASTERSHIP Although the primary election is past, the contest for the Medford postmastership is by no means over and candidates are still continuing their efforts for appointment. The latest move is a joint telegram sent by three of the candidates—Ben Garnett, H. D. Howard and W. N. Campbell—requesting that the choice of postmaster be left to a popular vote of the registered democrats of Medford, the candidates to be voted upon to be the applicants for the office, the election to be conducted by the newly elected county democratic committee. This suggestion did not meet the favor of the other candidates, who refused to sign the telegram of request. As one candidate expressed it, "this is an eleventh hour scheme to beat someone that has a cinch." The candidates, both active and receptive, as far as known, beside the three enumerated are, Colonel G. P. Mims, M. A. Rader, M. Purdin, Miss Anna M. Jeffery, John H. Butler and Lee Jacobs, while County Chairman Mose Barkdull is hoping that in case of a deadlock the lightning will strike him. The report that the postmastership had been offered to John S. Orth of the Medford National bank, almost caused heart failure among the candidates, and only the announcement from Mr. Orth that he was not a candidate and could not accept appointment, revived the drooping hopes of the faithful. GOLD HILL NUGGETS S. Bertelson and R. J. Rowen, a mining engineer of New York, took equipment to the Stuewe mine to pump out the shaft and make a thorough examination of the property. It will be remembered that the Stuewe mine is one of the valuable holdings in the Foots Creek district, and that S. Bertelson is the mining man so much interested in the cinnabar mines in the Meadows district. The Cooper mine on Sardine creek is now opened and a busy time is looked forward to on the creek, as the new owners are Seattle people, and the mill is expected to be in operation soon.
