The South Medford girls’ basketball team learned that the hard way Tuesday night, falling to Bend, 58-55 in overtime in the semifinals of the Nike Interstate Shootout. The Panthers (5-3) and Bend were neck-and-neck for 37 minutes, but a crucial turnover in the extra period helped give the Lava Bears a three-point lead. "It was a tight game the whole way," South coach Andrea Jaime said. "But it was just a few mistakes at key times that cost us the game." Bend had an astounding 33 free throw attempts, converting 23 of them. South was 13 of 24 from the line. Megan Sampson paced Bend with a game-high 20 points. Advertisement Brittany Farrer scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Panthers. Katie Singler scored 11 points and dished out seven assists. Marissa Towry also had nine rebounds. South beat Bend 60-50 on Dec. 11. "We need to remember that one loss isn’t going to kill us as long as we learn from our mistakes," Jaime said. "We didn’t do some fundamental things correctly; hopefully, we’ll bounce back and fix some of those things." The Panthers face Wilsonville today at 1 p.m. in the third-place game of the tournament’s lower division. NORTH MEDFORD 63, MCNARY 52 — At Lake Oswego, North Medford fell behind 10-0 in the early going but rallied in the second half to beat McNary at the Nike Interstate Shootout. The Black Tornado, now 7-1, meets Glencoe at 1 p.m. today. Mellisa Eastwold had 16 points, seven rebounds and six steals to lead North Medford, which went on a 21-9 run in the third period to erase a 29-25 halftime deficit. Michelle Westermann added 15 points and seven boards, and Megan Ross chipped in nine points, five assists and four steals for the Tornado. MARIST 55, EAGLE POINT 42 — At Lake Oswego, Marist extended a six-point third quarter lead to advance past Eagle Point in a consolation game of the Nike Interstate Shootout. Rachael Copeland scored 19 points to lead Marist, the No. 8-ranked Class 3A team. Beth Logan scored a season-high 13 points for Eagle Point (1-7) and Salina Sychla added 11. The Eagles will face either West Linn or Westview in the seventh-place final today. MYRTLE POINT 45, CRATER 42 — At Coos Bay, Myrtle Point posts Amanda Johnston and Ashley Duey combined to score 40 points as the Bobcats claimed a consolation-bracket victory over Crater at the Les Schwab South Coast Tournament. Myrtle Point, ranked fifth in the Class 2A state poll, took advantage of Crater foul trouble — posts Jessica Wasniewski and Nicki Tyska both played most of the second half with four fouls — to outscore the Comets 8-0 over the final two minutes. Emily Brookins led Crater (6-3) with 12 points, while Kenna Reiter contributed nine rebounds, three steals and three assists. South Wasco County took advantage of a 17 percent shooting performance by Butte Falls as Marlo Ambrose and Abbey Warnock scored 10 points each for the Redsides.
