Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli North slips by Crater Freshmen help Black Tornado girls pin 2-1 loss on Comets By FRANK SILOW Mail Tribune North Medford girls soccer coach Dick Darcy is not at all reluctant to insert freshmen into the varsity lineup. Darcy’s inclination served him well in a Southern Oregon Conference matchup Tuesday against Crater at Hoffbuhr Field. The Black Tornado received both its goals from freshmen in registering a 2-1 victory over the Comets. Jessica Reid gave North (2-0 SOC) a 1-0 lead 7:15 into the game, then Carissa Anderson broke a 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute to provide the game winner. "It doesn’t make a difference if they’re a freshman or what year, just so they have ability," said Darcy. "If they can work hard and are tough, they can play. We’ve got four freshmen and they’re all capable of scoring." Advertisement Anderson’s first varsity goal came from just outside the box after taking a pass from junior midfielder Alex Batzer. Anderson turned on the ball with her back to the goal and launched a shot into the right corner of the net past the outstretched arms of Comet goal keeper Somer Reed. "I knew I had room to turn and shoot," said Anderson, whose face was aglow with pride in scoring such an important goal. Anderson deflected some of the credit to Batzer, who made the play by winning the ball against a Crater defender on the right side. Batzer demonstrated strength by dribbling past two defenders and found Anderson in the center of the field. "I saw Carissa there and she made a great shot," said Batzer, who along with Reid created most of North’s offensive impetus throughout the game. Darcy praised Batzer for contributing to the Black Tornado’s dominance in the second half. "Alex is a workhorse," said Darcy. "She’s tenacious. In the second half, she was winning the ball almost every time." After Crater (0-2 SOC) played North pretty even in the first half, Darcy decided the shake up his lineup with the score knotted at 1-all. "We needed more offense, so we made some severe changes at halftime," Darcy said. Darcy inserted Irene Kendig, Natasha Sawall and Anderson into the front line along with Reid. With that combination in the offensive zone, North controlled much of the action. North Medford took the initial lead when Reid knifed in between Comet defenders Rosita Ramirez and Emily Brookins to score from 10 yards out on a roller that went into the left corner of the net. "We misplayed the ball and she (Reid) won it from two players," Crater coach Ed Lindbloom said. "It was unfortunate that we gave away an easy goal." Reid has now scored in both of North’s games this season. Against Crater, she possessed the ball quite often and played with a youthful fearlessness that put her on the turf time and again. "It’s a little scary for (Reid), but she is settling in," said Darcy. "She’s got the quickness and the speed to beat most people. And she has a good presence with the ball." Ramirez made amends for the defensive error when she converted a penalty kick to tie the game at the 15:25 mark. Crater’s Rachel Smith created the scoring chance when she was fouled in the box by North goalie Megan Ross, who came out of the net but could not control the ball and tripped Smith. Throughout the game, Ross played the position aggressively by continuing to meet the action away from the net. The Comets best scoring opportunity in the second half came in the 51st minute with the score still tied. The Black Tornado junior keeper came out to challenge Crater forward Andi Bagdan, who beat North’s defense with a quick move up the right side with the ball. Ross fell to the ground as she met Bagdan head on and caused a deflection. The ball went to an open Smith, whose shot to an empty net sailed over the crossbar. Darcy promotes Ross’ style of play, but it can leave the net vulnerable at times. "I like (Ross) being active," said Darcy, "but sometimes coming out can get you in trouble. By and large she makes good decisions." On Saturday, North Medford will look to stay undefeated when it plays at Eagle Point, while the Comets host Ashland.
