Volunteer Rogue River cleanup set for Saturday MERLIN -- The seventh annual Rogue River volunteer clean-up project will be held Saturday. Sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management's Medford District, the cleanup includes the banks of the Rogue from the mouth of the Applegate River downstream to the mouth of Grave Creek. The project is part of a state and national effort to clean and enhance waterways on May 22. Oregon's first river cleanup day in 1996 was prompted by flooding in the north part of the state. Current efforts are focused on enhancing public access and restoring rivers. Participants in the BLM project are invited to bring their own boats or to walk portions of the bank. Signup begins at 9 a.m. at the Hog Creek boat ramp about six miles upstream from Merlin. Following the cleanup, a free barbecue and awards ceremony for volunteers will be held at the Rand recreation site about 14 miles west of Merlin. Prizes include overnight accommodations at lodges on the wild section of the lower Rogue, river gear and gift certificates at local restaurants and businesses. If weather permits, entertainment at the barbecue will be provided by Chase n' the Blues, a Grants Pass band. Participants should bring drinking water, gloves and a lunch.
