Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 20, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 20, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 20, 1915 State road aid goes for paving Siskiyou grade SALEM — Efforts of Commissioners Madden and Lever of Jackson County to have the state highway commission agree to the expenditure of $45,000 of the state's funds on the northern section of the Pacific highway rather than on the Siskiyou section, failed today. The money was appropriated by the last legislature for the hard surfacing of the Siskiyou section, and the commissioners contested that the grades and fills, which make up about half of the Siskiyou section, would be notable in shape to hard surface this year, and that anyway Jackson county's money had been extravagantly spent by the former state highway engineer, and that the state should make good in some way. Commissioner Madden insisted at one stage of the meeting that the state should "skin its own skunks." Kay 'passes buck' Madden recalled that State Treasurer Kay had promised at Medford that the state would give an amount equal to that spent by Jackson county on the Siskiyous. Jackson county spent $200,000 on that section. Kay said he did not make the promise, and that it must have been Governor West who made it. Madden brought up the matter of $35,000 claimed by contractor Sweeney, in addition to the amount allowed by Engineer Bowlby. John H. Albert, member of the advisory committee, suggested during the discussion of this matter, that when the board departed from the fundamental principle of accepting an engineer's report or estimate, it was getting on dangerous ground.   'Man of the Hour' at Page theater The famous play, "The Man of the Hour," has been made into a five-part feature film, and Robert Warwick plays the title role of this great success, which will be at the Page theater Wednesday and Thursday. It is a play of modern city life in America, and a compelling love story of a novel character adds great strength to the picture. The Hearst-Selig Weekly is another attraction of this program. Tuesday afternoon and evening Francis X. Bushman, who has been voted the most popular photoplayer, is presented in a three-part Essany prize feature, "The Battle of Love." This story was published in the January "Ladies World" and all who have read it will be especially interested in the play.
