The concern of conservatives in the replacement of Justice Scalia has nothing to do with the color of the president but everything to do with his repetitious attempts to ignore, modify or circumvent the Constitution. President Obama and his potential replacement, Hillary Clinton, are of the opinion that the Constitution should be a "living document" interpreted by and conforming to the needs of each successive generation. Conservatives, including Justice Scalia, considered this to be a recipe for disaster. If history tells us anything it's that the Oval Office, under both Obama and Bush, can be a poor source of guidance for America. Despite efforts of the Founding Fathers to lay down an ironclad set of rules, the Constitution is losing ground as a reference. The loss of Scalia and a conservative majority in the Supreme Court could accelerate this transfer of authority to administration. Considering the potential candidates in the next presidential election this may be a bad time to shift the Supreme Court away from a conservative balance. Conservatives like Mitch McConnell aren't apposed because of color, they're simply terrified by the potential combination of Hillary Clinton and a liberal Supreme Court. Herman Dennington Gold Hill Listen and consider For Leonard Pitts to take a position of simultaneously being "pro-choice" and "anti-abortion" is nonsense. Pro-choice, by definition, must include the possibility of death. Anti-abortion does not include death, it allows every child their inalienable right to life. He said he realized that: “Abortion stops a beating heart.” Yet, he goes on to list three reasons (intellectually dishonest ones, I might add) which he accepts to justify the stopping of that beating heart. I would love that he would be anti-abortion, but he is not. He said, “This issue is not and never has been stark either/or …” Really? In spite of his twisted rationalization, to every baby in the womb in America today it is a "stark either/or" — life or death. And 55 million babies have paid with their lives for his so-called "mushy middle" ground. I call on Mr. Pitts to rethink his three reasons for justifying killing an unborn child, listen to his own beating heart, and consider the possibilities. Bryan Platt Eagle Point Important lessons The occupation of the Malheur Refuge is over. The refuge has been returned to the control of the BLM and most of the occupiers are in jail or have gone home. One occupier is dead. At first glance, this would seem to have been a fatal exercise. In the long run, though, I think important lessons have been learned. One lesson is that when a protest becomes armed, it ceases to be a protest and becomes an armed rebellion. In an armed rebellion, the cause you were demonstrating for is forgotten and fear and violence take its place. A second lesson learned is what you get when you allow the rule of law to lapse. A void is created, which is soon filled by groups like the occupiers. Groups who will impose their own kind of justice. Justice that comes from the barrel of a gun.
