Balanced attack keys Mustangs' win BOYS PREP BASKETBALL MURPHY -- Hidden Valley found a way to limit Yreka's 6-foot-11 post Matt Short and used a balanced attack to notch its fourth straight win with a 49-41 boys basketball home victory Tuesday. Short scored a game-high 15 points and the Miners' 6-6 forward Colin Blessing added eight against the shorter Mustangs. Hidden Valley (4-2), without a player taller than 6-4, doubled down on Short by positioning a defender in front and behind of the junior center. Senior guard Willy Isley led three Mustang players in double figures with 13 points. Guards Garrett Drummond and Kevin Ries combined for 21 points. Hidden Valley was still missing 6-3 starting forward Dereck Horning, who is out with a knee injury. Mustang senior forward Caleb Thomas came up big with eight points and nine rebounds. The second period proved decisive as Isley, Drummond and Thomas combined for 16 points and the Mustangs outscored Yreka 19-8. Hidden Valley also helped itself with a season-low seven turnovers.
