Family needs new memories to replace terror of last Christmas MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 13, 2014 @ 5:11 pm Updated Dec 13, 2014 at 5:32 PM Posted Dec. 13, 2014 @ 5:11 pm Updated Dec 13, 2014 at 5:32 PM » Social News Editor's note:  Light One Candle is an annual series sponsored by the Mail Tribune that focuses on an individual, group or agency that could use a helping hand during the holiday season. Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. Christmas is a bittersweet day for this Medford woman. This holiday marks the one-year anniversary of her sobriety but also the day that drugs and domestic violence nearly ended her life. Instead of waking to merriment with her four children, the 37-year-old spent Christmas morning in the intensive-care unit of a local hospital. Repeatedly stabbed in the arms and chest with kitchen knives, the woman suffered a punctured lung and sternum. Her husband was arrested for the crime, incited by methamphetamine-related psychosis, police said. Relatives stepped in to care for the couple’s children, ages 3 to 17, until their mother recovered. Since her husband was sentenced to prison for more than seven years, the woman works two jobs while raising their kids on her own and carrying the burden of physical and emotional scars. Kids Unlimited after-school programs furnish a safe and stable environment for the kids while their mother saves for better housing. With little money to spare for gifts, the woman wishes for some new Christmas memories to replace the terror of last year’s holiday. Food, clothing, kitchenware, warm blankets, bedding and towels would bring them comfort. Toys to encourage learning would be a joy for the 3-year-old boy. The 17-year-old son wears a men’s large and shoes in size 10.5. His 15-year-old brother wears a men’s medium and size 11 shoes. The 12-year-old girl wears youth clothing sizes, large in tops and 12 in pants, and men’s size 7 shoes. The youngest wears kids size 10.5. To help, bring donations to the front desk of Kids Unlimited, 821 N. Riverside Ave., or call 541-774-3900. — Sarah Lemon MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 13, 2014 @ 5:11 pm Updated Dec 13, 2014 at 5:32 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
