The labor force grew to 97,407 from 97,070 in August, but retirement and other factors have reduced the working community by 1,066 in the past year.  During the previous 12 months payroll employment rose by 890 jobs for a growth rate of 1.1 percent. By comparison, the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained 7.1 percent in September and the national figure was 5.9 percent. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures indicated 1,110 of 1,390 jobs gained in Jackson County during September were in public education, while retail stores picked up 610 positions. In the past 12 months, construction has added 280 positions, and manufacturing employment continued its rebound, adding 270 jobs. Wholesale trade employment gained 80 positions, while retail trade fell by 370. In Josephine County, there was an increase of 460 jobs in September as the seasonally adjusted jobless rate dipped slightly to 9.6 percent from 9.8 percent.
