He wouldn’t find relief until the very end. Breeze capped a consistent two-day performance with a difficult 20-foot putt on the 18th hole to edge defending champion Brooks Newsom and claim the Rogue Valley Stroke Play Championship men’s title at Cedar Links Golf Course. Newsom, from Portland, shot a 3-under-par 67 on Sunday to climb back into contention after posting a 72 on Saturday. Breeze finished Sunday with a 69 for a 138 total — one stroke better than Newsom. Advertisement "I knew that Brooks was (at 67) when I was on the 18th," said Breeze. "That’s when I knew I had to sink that putt." That putt turned out to be a devastating left-to-right, downhill shot. Breeze gave it a slight tap and let out a sigh of relief, followed by a victorious fist pump, as the ball lipped around the hole and in. "That’s the type of putt you make maybe once in 30 tries," he said. "Once it got on line I thought I had it." Glen Clark shot a 68 for a 141 to claim third and Terry Fretz also carded a 141 to grab fourth. Steve Wood, who held a share of the lead after Saturday, fell off the pace with a final-round 74. Terry Anderson won the senior men’s championship with a 145, while John Johnson took second at 147. Both came into Sunday’s round tied for second with a 72 behind leader Bob Harrell’s 71. Carmen Akins carded a 72 for a 147 to defeat Saturday’s leader Linda Johnson by three strokes. A record 175 players entered the tournament, also known as the city championships, including 50 with handicaps of 5.0 and lower. Newsom, who needed a playoff to beat Rick Dimick in last year’s tournament, entered Sunday’s final round trailing seven contenders and three strokes behind the leaders. He promptly birdied the first three holes to put himself back into contention. "I was just hitting the ball better today," said Newsom. "When I started out birdie, birdie, birdie, I knew I was back in it." He did find some rough patches, however, bogeying No. 7 and evening out with par on the final four holes. But his final round was nearly enough to repeat. "I put myself in position to win it," he said. "I had an 8- and 10-foot putt for birdie that missed, which hurt." Breeze, meanwhile, also started fast and was 2-under on the front nine before running into trouble. He three-putted hole Nos. 9, 10 and 12 but righted the ship over the final five. "I felt like I hit the shots better today," said Breeze. "I mean, if I don’t struggle on those three holes, I’m looking at a 66. "I was just good enough today, I guess." Breeze will look to continue his impressive summer run in the Southern Oregon Golf Tournament at Rogue Valley Country Club. He’s also won the Rogue Valley Country Club championship and team tournaments at Grants Pass and Klamath Falls earlier this summer. Qualifying for the Southern Oregon is Tuesday and Wednesday, with match play beginning Thursday and running through Labor Day.
