The Pirates ran to a 30-6 Skyline Conference football win over Hidden Valley on Friday, getting 186 yards rushing from Robins and three short touchdown bursts from Jimi Lockheed. Phoenix, which amassed 315 yards on the ground, squared its overall and league records to 2-2 and 1-1, respectively. "The kids played much better tonight," said Pirates coach Gordy Crowston, whose team rebounded from consecutive losses. "The effort was much better, and the execution was improved, but we still have a long ways to go." There were some kinks, he admitted, noting that Phoenix failed to score three times when it had the ball inside the Mustangs’ 10-yard line. But there were also promising signs. Offensively, senior tackle Vern Hull and junior guard Jason Hammon played very well, as did Phil Gibson, making his first start up front. Perhaps most impressive was that Hidden Valley did a good job of shutting down Phoenix’s bread-and-butter running plays, but the line adjusted well enough on secondary plays to make the offense go. The impact was felt almost immediately as Robins broke loose on a counter for a 64-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game. It was one of several big plays Robins would have. He also ripped off runs of 34, 22 and 17 yards and had a reception that covered 44 yards. "A lot of those were the type of runs where he was one man away from breaking it," said Crowston. "Their safety (Brian Evans) did a good job of tackling and saving some touchdowns for them." Lockheed added 49 rushing yards and scored on runs of 5, 4 and 6 yards. He also ran in three conversions. Phoenix quarterback Brady Rhodes completed 9-of-19 passes for 180 yards with one interception. Martin Gonzalez led the receivers with five catches for 109 yards. Hull, a lineman, first-time starter L.J. King, an end, and linebacker Cody Marsing anchored a defense that limited Hidden Valley to 89 yards rushing and 85 through the air. Marsing, in particular, Crowston said, "was stepping up and filling holes — which has been a place of emphasis for us — and the guy who’s really changing the look of our defense because he’s getting it done up inside." The Vikings (4-0, 2-0 Skyline) scored fourth-quarter touchdowns following a muffed punt return by the Chieftains and again after Mazama’s Aaron Phillips intercepted a pass. Ryan McGraw ran for 124 yards on 13 carries, including scores of 14 and 13 yards. Quarterback Kyle Blank ran for 91 yards and Seth Morehouse 72. Rogue River (2-2, 0-1 Skyline) was led by Nick Bashans, who rushed for 111 yards and had six catches for 71 yards. Beck hauled in two touchdown passes from quarterback Tim Cunha and returned the second-half kickoff for an 86-yard touchdown as the Knights (4-0) built a 35-3 lead in the third quarter. Junior running back Geoff Phelps paced the Knights ground attack with 62 yards on eight rushes and Ariah Need added 51 yards on nine attempts. Cunha was 6-of-14 passing for 120 yards. Beck caught five of those passes for 103 yards. North Valley linebackers Brandon Rankin, Nead and Duffy spearheaded the Knights defense along with Beck and Drew DeChenne in the secondary. Natty Krauss led the Illinois Valley ground attack with 58 yards and Couch tacked on 48 more. Clint Green rushed for 61 yards on eight carries and scored Henley’s only touchdown late in the game. Both of Beals’ touchdowns came on inside end reverses. The senior end tallied the Loggers’ first touchdown on an 18-yard first-period run, then completed the scoring with a 45-yard run early in the fourth quarter. He also came up with a key quarterback sack late in the game. Senior Ken Biando also made pivotal plays for Butte Falls. Biando intercepted three passes, including one returned 8 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Biando has eight interceptions on the season. In his first game at quarterback, Biando was 4-of-10 passing for 124 yards with two interceptions. Butte Falls rushed for 211 yards, with Isaac Stephenson accounting for 124 on 19 carries. The Loggers leading tacklers were David Hoel, B.J. Parker and Chris Copeland with six each. For Powers (2-2), senior running back Justin North rushed 19 times for 197 yards and one touchdown. North also had a 66-yard touchdown reception. Clark scored three TDs in the second quarter as the Elks pulled even at halftime, 22-all. Lenderman, a 6-foot, 220-pound senior running back, finished with 251 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries. Clark, who also scored four TDs, rushed 21 times for 217 yards.
