The Black Tornado won its opener 5-0 over the Ringors of Dallas, Texas, but dropped a 9-1 decision to the Salinas Storm. The Sting was defeated by the North Valley Rapids of the Sacramento area 2-1, then rebounded with a 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Invasion. The double elimination bracket part of the 116-team tournament begins today. The Black Tornado plays at 5:30 p.m., while Southern Oregon doesn’t play its first game in the championship bracket until 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Kendra Strahm pitched a two-hit shutout in the Black Tornado victory against the Ringors. Strahm struck out seven and walked three. Advertisement Steph Haskett paced the Black Tornado with two hits, one RBI and one run. Mallorie Hoover added a RBI single in the fourth and Deni Rowley came through with an RBI base hit one inning later. The Sting were limited to three hits in their loss to North Valley. Southern Oregon took a 1-0 lead in the third when Laura Jones walked, moved to second on a fly out, advanced to third on Jill Artoff’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball. North Valley tied the game in the fourth and won it in the bottom of the seventh. Against Kansas City, Crater High product Allesha Spradling went 3-for-4 with one RBI. The Sting supported Janelle Cristofaro’s five-hit pitching performance with seven hits. The Sting played errorless ball on the day. "We recovered from a sleepy start," Southern Oregon coach Bill Shearin said. "Our bats woke up in the second game. We were real balanced offensively and defensively." The Sting improved to 36-11 on the season. "We came down here to lay it all on the line and enjoy our week," said Shearin. "It’s an honor to get to this tournament. Winning some games is a bonus."
