Garcia's hat trick lifts Pelicans past Grizzlies KLAMATH FALLS - Luis Garcia demonstrated his all-state credentials in Southern Oregon Conference boys soccer Tuesday. The senior forward scored three goals as SOC-leading Klamath Union stymied Ashland, 3-0. Garcia staked the Pelicans to a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when he volleyed a pass from Tyler Casey by Ashland goalkeeper Josh Dunn from 8 yards out. Just one minute later, Garcia won a loose ball in front of the Grizzlies net and scored again. Halftime ended with undefeated KU leading 2-0. Garcia completed his hat trick on a breakaway in the 64th minute. It was the first match all season Dunn has allowed more than one goal. Ashland (8-2, 3-2 SOC) could not get into its passing game as the Pelicans kept constant pressure on the ball. Klamath outshot Ashland, 19-4. "They beat us to everything," Ashland coach Eisa Tiaa Tou Tou said. "We didn't challenge them. They are a well-rounded team and they know what it takes to win the game." NORTH MEDFORD 2, ROSEBURG 0 - At Roseburg, senior forward Evan McArthur scored one goal in each half and sophomore goalkeeper David Oliver posted the shutout. McArthur one-touched a left-footed shot into the side-netting 12 minutes into the match. Sophomore left midfielder Ian Norgan assisted on the goal with a crossing pass into the middle. McArthur took a through ball from senior central midfielder Kedric Charlton and dribbled past Indians goalkeeper Miguel Mendoza to score into an open net about 10 minutes into the second half. Black Tornado midfielders Charlton and Dan Torrey got the offense in gear by doing a good job distributing the ball to the outside wingers. The North Medford defense limited the Indians' chances, but Oliver snuffed Roseburg's best scoring opportunities with two outstanding saves. North Medford improved to 4-1 in the SOC and 7-2-2 overall. SOUTH MEDFORD 1, GRANTS PASS 0 - At Grants Pass, Justin Baldoni scored the lone goal in the 76th minute to lift South Medford to an SOC win. Grants Pass let a golden opportunity slip away in the first half when Brant Minor's go-ahead goal was erased due to an offside call. Baldoni finally broke the scoreless tie when he beat the Cavemen's goalkeeper and found the back of the net. Grants Pass fell to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the SOC. The Panthers improved to 4-1 in conference play. CRATER 8, EAGLE POINT 0 - At Central Point, senior striker Todd Sesock had two goals and an assist in the first half to lead Crater to its first SOC victory. The Comets (5-6, 1-4 SOC) led 5-0 at halftime. Sesock opened the scoring in the eighth minute on an assist from Brandon Steinmetz. Jacob Kurzyniec and Eric Hangartner teamed up on the Comets' next two goals. Kurzyniec scored in the 15th minute on Hangartner's assist. Then the players reversed roles on a goal one minute later. Sophomore Mike Scales scored the first of his two goals and Sesock completed Crater's first-half scoring. Scales, Eric Baker and Leo Espinosa, who played the first half in net, accounted for second-half goals. Crater outshot the Eagles, 28-6. Girls NORTH MEDFORD 2, ROSEBURG 0 - Jessica Bartalini and Kelly Vilarino each scored a goal at Hoffbuhr Field to help North Medford stay unbeaten in the Southern Oregon Conference. Bartalini broke a scoreless tie in the 25th minute and Vilarino added the final goal nine minutes later. The Black Tornado defense made it stand up, holding Roseburg without a shot on goal. North Medford improved to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the SOC. Roseburg dropped to 6-5-1 overall and 2-3 in conference play. KLAMATH UNION 1, ASHLAND 0 - At Ashland, Brianne Hackett provided the only offense as Klamath Union picked up an SOC win. Hackett scored in the 43rd minute as the Pelicans improved to 2-3 in the SOC while Ashland fell to 1-4. EAGLE POINT 2, CRATER 0 - At Eagle Point, Crater outshot Eagle Point 16-2 but was held scoreless as Eagle Point picked up its first SOC win in 15 matches. The Eagles' Alissa Goslin scored off a corner kick 11 minutes into the second half and teammate Renee Marlia-Johnson added the final goal five minutes later. Terra Jackson assisted on both scores. Goalkeeper Summer Adams made six saves, including a diving stop late in the contest to preserve the shutout. Kadee McLaughlin turned in a solid defensive effort on Crater's offensive standout Sarah Lafontaine. Eagle Point improved to 6-5-1 overall and 1-4 in the SOC.
