Eagle Point surprises Grants Pass SOC BOYS BASKETBALL EAGLE POINT -- Grants Pass came into its Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball opener against Eagle Point with an 8-2 record, while the Eagles had limped to a 2-8 start to the season. But Eagle Point ambushed the Cavemen with a 58-36 home victory on Tuesday. "The biggest factor was that they were missing Ian Elseth, their big 6-foot-7 post kid," Eagle Point coach Keith Williams said. "He makes a difference for them." Elseth was out with the flu. "We defended real well against their halfcourt offense and they didn't shoot real well," said Williams. "We didn't give them a chance to get into their full-court pressure. They didn't get any offensive rhythm going." The Eagles (3-8, 1-0 SOC) opened the campaign with an 0-5 record, partly because senior wing Nick Rouhier was out of the lineup with a broken collarbone. Rouhier, who saw his first action of the year in last week's Putnam-Clackamas Holiday Invitational, led all scorers with 19 points. Rouhier was 6-of-10 from the field and added four assists. "His (Rouhier) shot is coming around," said Williams. Eagle Point held an eight-point lead in the third quarter when three consecutive 3-pointers gave the Eagles command. Rouhier opened the nine-point run, then Eric Boucher followed with back-to-back treys. "Those were big shots," said Williams. "All of a sudden it's a 17-point lead and they don't look like they're going to get back in it."
