PREP ROUNDUP: Grizzlies notch MWL baseball sweep By Ashland Tidings Staff Apr 28, 2019 11:39 AM A A SPRINGFIELD — Eli Westrick tossed a four-hitter in an opening 5-2 win for Ashland and the Grizzlies pulled away in the nightcap to complete a Midwestern League baseball sweep Saturday. Ashland won the second game, 10-8. Westrick allowed one earned run and struck out six in going the distance in Game 1. Nate Carter went 2-3, scored a run and drove in what proved to be the winning run in the third inning — scoring Dane Reynolds, who had reached on an error. Reynolds went 2-3 and scored two runs for the Grizzlies (12-8, 7-5 MWL). In Game 2, Evan McLennan picked up the victory by pitching four innings in relief against Springfield (3-18, 2-10). Carter went 2-4 with three runs scored and an RBI and McLennan contributed two hits, two runs and one RBI. Ashland broke a 6-all tie by scoring four runs in the fourth inning. Softball ASHLAND 14-18, SPRINGFIELD 0-6: At Springfield, Ashland freshman Gabby Heiken picked up both pitching victories to help the Grizzlies secure their first Midwestern League doubleheader sweep since May 8, 2015, against North Eugene. Heiken allowed only two hits with one walk and two strikeouts in the five-inning opener for Ashland (7-12, 4-8 MWL), which has won five of its last six games. In Game 2, she allowed five hits and one unearned run by Springfield (0-18, 0-12) with seven strikeouts and one walk in 52/3 innings. Ella Hart had three hits and five RBIs in the nightcap, with Ruby Adams adding three hits and the Grizzlies getting two apiece from Jessie Walls and Shelby Brown. Heiken was 1-for-1 with three walks and four runs scored. Kallin Hakes and Heiken each went 3-for-4 in Game 1, with Adams and Heiken posting three RBIs apiece. Track and Field MEDFORD DISTANCE CARNIVAL: At Medford, with Ashland boys multiple state champion EJ Holland resting for the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays in Portland on Friday, Grizzlies sophomore Reed Pryor had a chance to shine. Pryor achieved a personal record in winning the boys 3,000 in a time of 8 minutes, 55.25 seconds. Pryor’s time is the fourth-fastest statewide at the 5A level. Holland’s 3,000 time of 8:21.17 is the state’s fastest at any level.
