Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 5, 2006 OIT stuns Raiders with late charge KLAMATH FALLS — The 16th-ranked Oregon Tech men’s basketball team scored the final seven points for a stunning, 76-71 come-from-behind victory over ninth-ranked Southern Oregon at a jam- packed Miles Court Saturday night. The Owls (20-6, 9-5 CC) upset their higher-ranked archrivals for the third time this season and for the 13th consecutive encounter after overcoming a 65-59 deficit with 3:26 left. Seldom-used guard Nate Lewis, a 6-foot freshman from Culver, canned three 3-pointers down the stretch for OIT, including the eventual game-winner with 52 ticks remaining. "He played three minutes and made three 3s," said SOU coach Brian McDermott. "I don’t know the last time the kid even played before that." The outcome snapped a three-game OIT losing streak and kept the Owls’ slim regular-season league championship hopes alive, and it dropped the Raiders to 20-5 overall and 10-4 in league play. Senior All-American Shea Washington nearly helped Southern Oregon halt a seven-year, eight-visit drought against OIT in Klamath Falls with his 35th career double-double consisting of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Advertisement The 6-foot-7 power forward’s free throws provided SOU with the six-point bulge, which capped a stirring 29-11 Raider run spanning 12 minutes. "They had gone nine possessions in row with one point," said McDermott of his team’s game-changing run in the second half. "Then (Lewis) comes in and makes those shots." Having already downed the Raiders 72-67 in a November nonconference game and 74-71 in an overtime game in Ashland, OIT shot a sizzling 57 percent in surging to a 48-36 advantage five minutes into the second half. Oregon Tech shot 59 percent (16 of 27) in staging a 39-32 halftime lead. With the loss, the Raiders fell one game behind league-leader Warner Pacific, which slipped past Eastern Oregon 79-75 Saturday. SOU hits the road next weekend for a 7:30 p.m. matchup on Friday against Eastern Oregon at La Grande. The Raiders close the two-game swing at Caldwell, Idaho, with a contest against Albertson.
