The two-alarm fire called in all five city engines, along with one from Phoenix, said Medford Fire Chief Dave Bierwiler. Flames were confined mostly to the second floor of Smith Realty at 205 Crater Lake Ave., Bierwiler said. A sprinkler system kept the 7:19 p.m. blaze from spreading to neighboring homes, said Medford Fire Marshal Dan Patterson. No one was injured, but Realtor June Smith lamented the death of her "happy and tame" pet parakeet. Although she and husband Gordon Smith had all their business records backed up on laptop computers, the loss of their office's home-like interior hurt. "I want to go in there and see what's left of my beautiful building," June Smith said. "We put a lot into that building." A report of smoke coming from the converted residence on the fringes of Medford's historic district alerted firefighters, the quickest of whom responded in six minutes from the Highland Drive station, Bierwiler said. Phoenix Fire Department and Jackson County Fire District No. 3 were left to cover the rest of the city, Bierwiler added. Emergency vehicles shut down Crater Lake Avenue for more than an hour between East Main and Jackson Streets. One engine was likely to remain on scene throughout the night, Bierwiler said.
