Phoenix stays atop Skyline TALENT - It wasn't easy, but the Phoenix softball team did what it needed to Saturday to keep pace in the Skyline Conference championship race. Knocking off North Valley, 4-3 in eight innings and 9-5, the 10th-ranked Pirates (20-5 overall) improved to 16-4 in Skyline play with one game remaining. Rogue River, by virtue of its Saturday sweep at Mazama, is also 16-4, and so the conference title comes down to Tuesday's game between Phoenix and the Chieftains at 4 p.m. at Hagler-James Park in Talent. After leaving 11 runners on base, Phoenix finally claimed Game 1 when Jennifer Dunlap smacked a single, stole second and third and sped home on Jamie Escobar's sacrifice fly. Dunlap finished the opener 3-for-5 with three stolen bases. Pirates pitcher Tiffany Ross struck out 12 while giving up four hits and no earned runs in Game 1. In Game 2, Ross (16-3) picked up another pitching victory, permitting two earned runs. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate. The Knights (9-11 Skyline) were led offensively by Michelle Beck, who clobbered a triple in both games. Henley was also tied for first in the conference entering Saturday, but the Hornets' doubleheader sweep at the hands of Illinois Valley knocked them from the title picture. ROGUE RIVER 9-11, MAZAMA 1-0 - At Klamath Falls, Rogue River (17-5, 16-4 Skyline) received strong pitching performances from Katie Glasscock and Angela Winfrey to remain tied for first in the Skyline with Phoenix. Melissa Day had a productive day at the plate with a bases-loaded double to score three runs in the opener and a 2-for-2, three-RBI effort in the nightcap. Glasscock (10-2) allowed four hits, struck out five and walked one in the first game. Kristi Frederick provided the big bat with three hits and two runs, while Winfrey added two hits. ILLINOIS VALLEY 8-5, HENLEY 6-3 - At Klamath Falls, Kim Hamilton pitched Illinois Valley to victories in both ends of the doubleheader and drove in the eventual winning run in the 11th inning of the opener. In the first game, Hamilton's 11th-inning triple scored the runner placed on second to start the inning according to international tiebreaker rules. Kristy Cook followed with a RBI single for the Cougars' second run. Hamilton ended the opener with three hits, two RBIs and two runs. Cougar teammates with two hits each were Tiphanie Pope, Sydney Derda, Ricci Coultas and Cook. Saltmarsh helped herself at the plate by going 3-for-3 and scoring a pair of runs in Game 1, while Lori McLain went 3-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored in Game 2. Non-League CHILOQUIN 3-1, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1-4 - At Chiloquin, Cascade Christian got a two-run double from Natalie Dicus to secure the Game 2 victory and create a deadlock at the top of the Southern Cascade League. The two are tied for the league lead at 7-1 with two games remaining. The Challengers (13-10 overall) tallied three runs in the third inning of the second game. Laural Kelley singled and Rusti Mosser reached on an error, and both scored on Dicus' double. Dicus scored on a sacrifice fly by Nicole Plummer. Kelley struck out 12 in pitching the victory. She gave up four hits and walked three. In the opening loss, Kelley fired a three-hitter and fanned eight. Whitney Brookins singled in Hannah Gettman, who reached on an error, for Cascade Christian's lone run.
