Turn on green, but not always Would you review again for us how the new traffic signals are to be interpreted? Left turn signals are especially confusing. -- Gwen W., Phoenix Sure, Gwen. Those signals allow what the traffic guys call "protected permissive left turns." The initial phase, a green arrow, signals the protected phase. During this time you can turn left knowing that traffic coming from the opposite side is stopped. The arrow is followed by a green circle, which signals a yielding left turn. This allows you to make your left turn if there's no traffic coming through from the opposite direction.
