Raiders fall short in league openers NAMPA, Idaho -- The Southern Oregon University men's basketball team didn't quite start out Cascade Conference play as they had hoped. After dropping an 89-57 decision to Albertson College on Friday, the Raiders looked to come away from their Idaho trip with a split. Obie Strickler scored 34 points and shot 8-of-12 from 3-point range but it wasn't enough as Northwest Nazarene ended its eight-game losing streak Saturday with a 101-91 victory over Southern Oregon in Cascade Conference action. Jeremy Stockett overcame foul trouble to record a double-double for the Crusaders by grabbing 11 rebounds and connecting on 11-of-13 shots from the field to notch 31 points. Stockett's 17 first-half points helped Northwest Nazarene grab a 42-40 lead at the break. The Raiders stayed close but couldn't overcome their own foul trouble, losing Shavon Haynes and Martin DeGroot to fouls in the second half. The Crusaders (7-10, 1-0 Cascade Conference) took advantage by making 33 of 42 from the free-throw line to seal the win. SOU made good on 15 of its 17 attempts. Both teams shot well from the field but the Raiders were out-rebounded 37-23. Strickler dished out five assists while Tom Chipps added 26 as Southern Oregon fell to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Medford's Jeff Nielson contributed 20 points and seven rebounds for Northwest Nazarene. Nielson led Northwest Nazarene in a 96-86 loss to Oregon Tech on Friday, scoring 26 points on 11-for-13 shooting. N.
