Two Grizzlies make semis May 12, 2006 12:00 AM A A Lachmund, Spurlock earn berths to state Staff and wire reports MEDFORD — The Ashland High boys tennis team advanced two singles players to the semifinals at the Southern Oregon Conference district championships Thursday at North Medford High, but has little hope of defending its league title. The Grizzlies trail North Medford, 36-31, in the team standings, and with just two players left in the championship bracket — No. 2-seeded Kyle Lachmund and No. 4 draw — will probably have to settle for a runner-up finish. By advancing to Saturday’s semis, Lachmund and Spurlock earned the right to represent the SOC in the Class 4A state tournament, May 18-19-20 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Portland. The Grizzlies’ No. — doubles team of John Lacey and Nick Cross also finished strong, winning the consolation championship. “All the kids played wonderfully,” Ashland head coach Dick Streng said. “Almost every one of them won two matches and were into the quarters and if they didn’t, they were in the consolation bracket. Everybody got to play two, maybe three times today.” Lachmund, a junior, walloped Derrick Foley of Roseburg 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, then sent South Medford’s Antoine Guy packing in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-1. Lachmund will face third-seeded Michael Tribble of North Medford in the semis, 10 a.m. Saturday at the same site. Spurlock, a senior, had a tougher time moving on. He beat Jordan Santos of Roseburg, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round, then overcame a first-set loss to beat unseeded Mickey Allapuch or Grants Pass in the quarterfinals, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Spurlock will play top-seeded Colt Hoeptner of North Medford in the semis. Also for Ashland, Jack Turner and the doubles team of Caleb Morrison and John Weighter all fell one win shy of the district semifinals and a berth to state. Turner won his first round match, 6-4, 6-0, over South Medford’s Xavier Brasseur, but fell 6-2, 6-3, to Tribble in the quarters. Morrison and Weighter beat Keith Townsend and Aaron Leiberman of Grants Pass, 6-4, 6-0, in the first round and lost to second-seeded Andrew Besson and Josh Borrelli of Roseburg, 6-3, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. Girls tennis At Roseburg, Ashland’s Kayla Moyse rolled into the semifinals of the SOC district tournament Thursday and will be joined there by two teammates. Moyse, the tournament’s top-seeded singles player, dominated her first two matches — a 6-1, 6-0 win over Aly Wilson of South Medford and a 6-0, 6-0 quarterfinal win over Amber Chambers of North Medford — and will play unseeded Rebecca Weicher of Grants Pass in Saturday’s semifinals (10 a.m.). Ashland’s top doubles tandem of Samantha Laskos and Maddy Stokes matched that effort by winning two matches as well to also clinch a spot in the state tournament, May 18-21 at Portland Tennis Center and Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton. Laskos and Stokes, the No. 3-seeded doubles team, beat Jordan Hess and Carli Sash of South Medford, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round before slamming Erin and Lindsay McDonough of Grants Pass, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. “They did really well,” Ashland coach Bridget Zwemki said of her team as a whole. “My doubles teams played some great matches and my singles players struggled a little bit, but still put everything they had out there.” Also for Ashland, Jordan Rooklyn advanced to the second round, where she suffered a 6-0, 6-1 setback to second-seeded Lauren Wilson of North Medford. Laskos and Stokes will face the second-seeded team of Erica Schultz and Sarah Louie in the semis. The Grizzlies also had two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals before falling one win shy of a berth in the state tourney. Alicia Walcher and Kelsey Mills won their first two matches, including a three-setter in the second round, before losing, 6-1, 6-0, to Schultz and Louie of North Medford, and Niki Jacquat and Olivia Florio of Ashland won consecutive two-setters before being bounced in two themselves, 6-1, 6-2, by top-seeded Sam and Natalie Ruffe of South Medford.
