Cate, the new county pathologist and agriculturist, and Horticultural Commissioner A. C. Allen of this district. The question of blight and apple and pear scab, with kindred matters of present moment to the fruitests of the valley, will be fully discussed and the situation relative thereto thoroughly analyzed by the county and district officials and the fruit men. The former earnestly desire to secure the ready co-operation of the latter in these important matters at this particular time — for it is the opportune moment to make a concerted attack on the pests. Pathologist Cate also desires to take advantage of this meeting to become acquainted with the fruit men of the valley, with whom he will have more or less intimate association in an official way. It is his purpose fully to familiarize himself with the situation here with respect to work that requires immediate attention and to encourage the fruit people to consult with him at all times about matters of interest with which he is concerned. It is imperative, Mr. Cate says, to do substantial and thorough work at once against the further ravage of the blight in this valley, on which a fairly good start has been made, and particularly against the pear and apple scab, which is at this time in the valley the fruit men's most dangerous and persistent enemy. It is hoped that the fruit men will respond to this call and help to begin this important matter right and at once. It is the purpose of Mr. Cate and Mr. Allen to hold a series of such meetings at the several important points in the valley and thoroughly to arouse the fruit interests to the necessity of vigorous work at once. The next meeting will probably be held at Ashland. Many requests have reached Mr. Cate for such a conference.
