Humboldt topples RiverDogs EUREKA, Calif. - The Humboldt All-Stars needed only one inning to get past the Southern Oregon RiverDogs on Sunday. Humboldt scored eight runs in the bottom of the third inning and held on to defeat the RiverDogs 10-7 in Amateur baseball play. The All-Stars started the onslaught in the third with three straight singles to load the bases, and an ensuing error by shortstop Nate Mayben allowed Humboldt's first two runs to score. Humboldt loaded the bases again and Curt Thurston hit a two-run single followed by Brett Harpham's two-run double. John Wheeler capped the inning with an RBI single. The RiverDogs closed the gap to 9-7 in the eighth off a two-run single by Tim Alvarez, but could get no closer. Alvarez led Southern Oregon at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Mike Newmann and Abe Lumpkin combined to go 6-for-10, driving in four runs, while Mayben belted two doubles. Steve DeClerck extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-out base hit in the ninth inning. Harpham hit a double and had two RBIs to lead the All-Stars. The RiverDogs (16-16) ended their California road trip against Humboldt and Redding at 1-4. Babe Ruth 14-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT - At Grants Pass, Medford's 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-star team lost 6-5 in seven innings to Umpqua Valley in the All-Star tournament championship game at All-Sports Park. Cole Rohrbough, Troy Marsic and Eric Mobbs each had one hit for Medford who takes home second place for the second straight year. After losing in the first round to the same Umpqua Valley team 11-1 on Friday, Medford reeled off four straight wins to advance to the championship game.
