"It’s about taking some time to be with my family," said Hilary Best. "It’s really personal." Best, 50, has been director for four years of the nonprofit agency that provides mediation services to families, schools, agencies and the community. Recently engaged, Best says she plans to spend more time with her fianc and her two younger children, ages 10 and 12. The move came as a surprise to Alice Cushman, chairwoman of the agency’s 14-member board of directors. But she said several able candidates have sought the post and a decision about replacing Best could come as soon as next week, or as late as January. "There are always people whose hearts are in this place," Cushman said. The director of the agency is responsible for six employees and an annual budget of about $200,000. The successful candidate will have many strengths, including organizational skills, a passion for the program and development potential. "The No. 1 skill is getting money," said Cushman. "It’s selling the program, getting grants." For information about Mediation Works, call 770-2468.
