Ross' double-double lifts Pirates past Illinois Valley PHOENIX � Tiffany Ross has been slowed with an illness recently, but the Phoenix sophomore post seemed to be back to full strength in Skyline Conference girls basketball Friday. Ross registered a double-double as the Pirates defeated stubborn Illinois Valley, 48-37. Phoenix (8-6, 5-2 Skyline) led most of the way, but the Cougars stayed within striking distance. "It was a game of runs," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "We�d get up by eight or 10 points, then we�d have some kind of letdown and would let them come back in the game again." Ross paced the Pirates� attack with 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. "She (Ross) works real hard, is strong and gets good position," said Walker. "When the ball comes down around her, she usually comes up with it." Senior post Sutton Jackson also hauled in 11 rebounds, while senior wing Jessica Prisbrey contributed 11 points and nine rebounds. "We actually did a good job on the defensive boards," said Walker. "We were forcing them into some perimeter shots and we were limiting them to one shot." Phoenix senior point guard Chelsi Clark added eight points, but helped the Pirates maintain their advantage by going 4-for-4 on free throws in the fourth quarter. Sophomore, 6-foot-2 post Elaina Renius led the Knights (7-9, 4-3) with 16 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks. The Hornets (8-7, 6-1 Skyline) triumphed despite making just 10 of 25 free throw attempts. Sheena Gannon had a game-high 16 points for the Mustangs. Sophomore post Megan Albertson scored 13 points and Fran Hartman and Megan Flynn added 12 each for the Honkers (8-7, 4-3 Skyline), who led just 39-33 after three periods before pulling away in the fourth. Lakeview made 15 of 23 free throws in the final period, including a 6-for-8 showing by point guard Brandi Winters.
