North squeaks by Tualatin LAKE OSWEGO � Tualatin�s Birdie Wermy set a tournament record with six 3-point baskets, but North Medford had the last laugh as the Black Tornado edged the Timberwolves 47-46 in consolation play at the Lake Oswego Shootout. Senior post Ashley Nelson led the Tornado with 17 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots, while Wermy finished with 18 points for Tualatin. While Wermy had the hot hand from the outside, the Timberwolves were woeful at the free-throw line, hitting just 4 of 19. North Medford converted 15 of 25 from the charity stripe, including three in the late going by freshman point guard Anna Lilly. "Free throws were the difference in the game," said North Medford coach J.T. Thomas, whose team improved to 3-6. "We made them when it counted." Kara Hwang added nine points and eight rebounds and 6-foot-1 sophomore post Kerstin Mellbye collected 11 rebounds for the Tornado, which meets Silverton in the consolation semifinals at 11:30 a.m. today.
