PREP SOCCER Coughlin steps down at St. Mary's Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 5, 2015 at 8:50 PM Posted Aug. 5, 2015 at 8:50 PM » Social News St. Mary’s High boys soccer head coach Paul Coughlin has stepped down after leading the program for nine years, the school announced Wednesday. Eric Pyka will replace Coughlin, who will remain on staff as an assistant. Coughlin, 49, amassed a record of 108-31-6 at St. Mary’s. His clubs made nine state playoff appearances and three state championship appearances. Coughlin made the decision to spend more time with his family and focus on his business, according to a press release. “I feel like the luckiest coach alive in our region,” Coughlin said in the release. “St. Mary’s has given me and my family memories and friendships that will last for generations. I want to thank all the past and present parents for trusting me to help guide their children, about whom I have deep love, respect and appreciation.” Pyka, 37, has coached soccer with the Rogue Valley Timbers for 10 years. He is a fifth-grade teacher in the Medford School District. “I am incredibly excited and humbled to have the opportunity to succeed coach Paul Coughlin,” Pyka said in the release. “He has an outstanding legacy at St. Mary's and I am honored to follow in his footsteps. I'm looking forward to growing the boys soccer program and being a part of this amazing school.” The Crusaders open the 2015 season against Catlin Gabel at home on Aug. 28. St. Mary’s went 10-5 and lost to Creswell in the Class 3A/2A/1A state quarterfinals last fall.
