Barrett tossed a one-hitter to highlight a 3-1 victory in the opener, then Phoenix used a 14-hit attack to in a 7-3 win. "We really came through when we needed to," said Phoenix coach Molly Pendergast, whose team is tied with Henley for first place. "We hit real well and played pretty well in the field." In Game 1, Barrett didn’t allow a hit until Tiffannee Griffin led off the seventh with a single. The junior pitcher struck out three and walked four. After Illinois Valley (5-5, 4-4 Skyline) scored an unearned run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead, Phoenix answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game on a single by Singleton and Jaclyn Unruh’s RBI single. Advertisement Phoenix (6-4, 5-1 Skyline) scored what proved to be the winning runs in the sixth when George and Singleton singled and both came around to score on a wild throw at first on Terra Fry’s grounder. In the second game, Phoenix fell behind 3-0 after IV scored a single run in the second and two in the third. The Pirates responded with three runs in their half of the third to knot the score. Fry opened the frame with a walk, Unruh bunted for a single and Barrett singled to load the bases. Fry scored on Alex Hanscom’s ground out, then Nicole Engle blasted a two-run double. Unruh added a two-run single in the fourth, and the Pirates completed the scoring on RBI singles by George and Singleton in the fifth. George and Barrett each collected three hits for Phoenix in Game 2, while Unruh and Engle had two hits apiece.
