Edwards sets record upon return ROGUE RIVER Two weeks after collapsing from heat exhaustion at the Stanford Invitational, Paris Edwards set a course record at the Chieftain Invitational. The Ashland High senior covered the 5,000-meter course at Valley of the Rogue Park Saturday in 17 minutes, 58 seconds to set the record and tie her personal-best time. The Grizzlies handily won the team competition with 38 points. Meanwhile, Trevor Coolidge of St. Marys won the boys race in a lifetime best of 15:51.5, while Molalla won the boys team title with 62 points. "Paris was in bad shape two weeks ago," Ashland coach Bob Julian said. "She was running at a 17:30 pace, but it was a hot day and she collapsed. They took her into the medical tent and hooked her up to an IV." Julian held Edwards out of practice for the next 10 days and ordered the defending Class 4A state champion to run at a leisurely pace for the opening mile Saturday. "She was very relaxed and very fresh and made it look easy," Julian said. "I doubt that she broke six minutes in the opening mile, but then she picked it up and finished strong." Edwards won by 17 seconds over Jeane Goff of Cascade High of Turner, who finished in 18:15. Bobbi Wright of Rogue River was third in 18:54, Kendall Clark of Ashland fourth in 19:23, Melis Garner of Roseburg fifth in 19:29 and Leah Sawyer of St. Marys sixth in 19:41.7. Coolidge was in a pack of runners through the opening mile of the boys race but broke into the lead a short time later and never trailed the rest of the way. However, Phoenixs Nathan May closed hard over the final half-mile and finished less than four seconds in back of Coolidge in 15:54.9. Coolidges time was the second-fastest in meet history, topped only by Cascades Noel Paulson (15:38) in 1998. "I kind of expected Trevor to win because hes beaten most of the guys who were out there today," St. Marys coach Joe Volk said. "But I give May a lot of credit. He came from quite a ways back and made things interesting at the end." Chris Roberts of Roseburg finished third in the boys race in 16:08.6, while Peter Ludblad of Molalla was fourth in 16:17.4 and Kyle Robbins of Gold Beach fifth in 16:21.2.
